HISTORY

In 1999, Griffin Technology Academies opened Vallejo’s first charter school, Mare Island Technology Academy. MIT Academy has given thousands of local underserved high school students the opportunity to graduate, not only with a plan to go to college, but with an associates degree. Together with the support of the Vallejo community, GTA opened three additional charter schools - MIT Academy Middle School, Griffin Academy High School, and Griffin Academy Middle School. Through it all, the community of Vallejo has supported GTA, our schools, and most of all, our amazing students!


Since 1999, our schools have provided a rigorous yet nurturing learning environment that strives to meet the needs of all kids. Founded on a “growth” philosophy that all kids can learn, MIT alumni have gone on to UC Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA, Howard, and over 50 other universities nation-wide.

CORE VALUES

 

    • Extended school day, large no-cost before & after school program (we’re open from 7 AM - 6 PM and serve three meals per day at each campus).
    • Named “One of America’s Best High Schools” by US News & World Report. Also, winner of 6 California gold medals for academic performance, Title 1 performance, and CTE education, and a middle-school national “Schools to Watch” award.
    • Safe schools use a unique technology called Intrado, a low suspension rate, and a strict dress code.
    • A strong academic environment with college preparation emphasis – over 90% of graduates are accepted directly into colleges and universities!
    • 60+ highly qualified, credentialed teachers (many with advanced degrees).
    • Small and diverse student population with an average student-to-teacher ratio of 24:1.
    • 99% student re-enrollment rate from one year to the next.
    • All classrooms (even Physical Education) have electronic Smart Boards, LCD projectors, document cameras, and complete teacher workstations.
    • Middle school students learn to type 65 wpm, program in 3 languages, and earn Microsoft certifications in Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. High school students can choose from various technology certifications in digital art, robotics, and medical technology.
    • The innovative curriculum emphasizes field trips, “hands-on” experiences, and a strong music and digital art program.
    • High schools are fully WASC accredited and A-G accredited!
    • Independent public charter schools – no tuition or charge to parents!
    • Commitment to Vallejo – each year, our students invest thousands of hours in community service and internships in Vallejo.
    • Finalizing a $40 million construction project on one site, including a new gym and sports fields, and upgrades worth $8mn on the other.
