Dear Students, Families and Staff,

On the eve of the first day of school, I want to take this opportunity to welcome all new and returning families to the 28th year of our small but mighty school organization.

Staff have been working hard all summer to prepare students for their first day of school. Tomorrow when the big day arrives, we will be on the Positive Place (Mare Island Technology Academy and MIT Academy) and Hobbs Avenue (Griffin Academy Middle and High School) campuses greeting you and ready to teach and guide you.

Twenty-eight years later, Griffin Technology Academies continues to grow

When GTA was first founded, it was just one school, Mare Island Technology Academy. Its college-going culture and mission quickly became popular in Vallejo and surrounding areas, leading to the creation in 2002 of MIT Academy High School. Our younger schools, Griffin Academy Middle and High School were founded in 2018 and 2019 to support the strong family demand for MIT. Their different programs attract different families, but their common threads include a commitment to academic rigor and taking college courses in high school.

This fall, we are once again seeing strong demand for our four schools. Thank you to both returning and new families for your partnership as we together educate your children.

Changes for the New School Year

We have been busy instituting many changes this summer on both of our campuses. We are excited to welcome new leadership at Griffin Academy in the role of Site Director. Dr Charquita Arnold has already made an impact before school started. With the same leadership team at MIT under Director of Schools Lai Saeteurn, the most visible changes at MIT are the facilities upgrades, allowing our middle school students to return after four years at the temporary Corcoran Avenue campus. Please read the Parent Square updates from Ms Saeteurn and Dr Arnold today for the many details of how the first day will go at our two campuses.

The other visible change at both campuses is our enrollment growth. We have more students this year at GTA than for the past four years. This higher enrollment will make each of our campuses busier, and will allow GTA to offer more classes and more clubs this year.

GTA Board Meeting last week

The GTA Board of Directors met last week to ratify the election of the 2026-27 Student Board Members. By way of background, Griffin and MIT Academy seniors vote for their school board candidates in the spring; the GTA board in August then approves the election, and the students serve as each school’s representative to the board for the rest of the year. Last Tuesday, Angelica Gallegos Toscano (MIT) and Jonathan Canul (Griffin) were voted in and welcomed by their fellow board members.

After the student board members were approved, the board then took action to amend the academic calendar, changing the spring break weeks to match the VCUSD academic calendar. Finally, the board voted to opt into the new Community Schools Apportionments Program, a new funding source that will help to fund our Wellness Coaches and our Family Education initiatives, among other things.

En la víspera del primer día de clases, quiero aprovechar esta oportunidad para dar la bienvenida a todas las familias nuevas y que regresan al 28º año de nuestra pequeña pero poderosa organización escolar.

El personal ha estado trabajando arduamente durante todo el verano para preparar a los estudiantes para su primer día de clases. La Dra. Charquita Arnold ya ha tenido un impacto antes de que comenzaran las clases. Reunión de la Junta de GTA la semana pasada

La Junta Directiva de GTA se reunió la semana pasada para ratificar la elección de los Miembros Estudiantiles de la Junta para 2026-27. Como antecedente, los estudiantes de último año de Griffin y MIT Academy votan por sus candidatos a la junta escolar en primavera; la junta de GTA en agosto aprueba la elección, y los estudiantes sirven como representantes de cada escuela ante la junta por el resto del año. El martes pasado, Angelica Gallegos Toscano (MIT) y Jonathan Canul (Griffin) fueron elegidos y bienvenidos por sus compañeros miembros de la junta.

Después de que se aprobaron los miembros estudiantiles de la junta, la junta tomó medidas para enmendar el calendario académico, cambiando las semanas de vacaciones de primavera para que coincidan con el calendario académico de VCUSD. Finalmente, la junta votó a favor de optar por el nuevo Programa de Asignaciones de Escuelas Comunitarias, una nueva fuente de financiamiento que ayudará a financiar a nuestros Entrenadores de Bienestar y nuestras iniciativas de Educación Familiar, entre otras cosas.
